There were a number of consequences of the experience of the Battle of Verdun as it turned out in our world. The first was that the French retained a faith in the efficacy of fortifications leading to the development of the Maginot Line 1936-40 using a modernised version of the defences of Verdun, with satellite forts and ouvrages around larger forts. The resistance to shelling and the difficulties in taking them provided a lesson that differed from the perceptions of Falkenhayn and indeed other German commanders. The ability to by-pass such fortresses was to become even greater with the far increased motorisation of armies, the greater use of military aircraft and indeed the introduction of paratroops by the late 1930s. If many of the fortifications around Verdun had fallen, let alone the citadel itself, then the French attitude may have been altered and the use of mobile forces including tanks could have been adopted in the way Charles De Gaulle (1890-1970) was later to advise. Furthermore seeking to stem a repeat of the Verdun Offensive may have also led to a more offensive attitude towards the Germans in 1939 let alone in response the German invasion in 1940.
